Vegan Food in Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica
Puerto Viejo is a mini vegan beach haven with tons of vegan options within walking distance. It’s small enough for you to keep running into the same folks as you make your way from vegan spot to vegan spot during your stay, like I did.
Just as a forewarning, seating at most restaurants is outdoors with a few fans at best. There is always a cool breeze and the temperature is comfortable when I slide through town. I know we have some fam out there that appreciates an ice-cold AC blast while they eat, so be expecting natural air as your cooling agent. A little sweat ain’t never hurt nobody!
The heat definitely doesn’t stop me, because I LOVE me some Puerto Viejo! As BLACK VEGAboNd, I love seeing and interacting with my people while abroad, so Puerto Viejo has always had a special place in my heart! It’s located in Limón on the Caribbean side of the country and has a lot of residents that have or are decendents of people that have relocated there from Caribbean islands such as Barbados and Jamaica.
Therefore, you’ll frequently see Black mannequins and figurines in stores, murals/street art of Black people on the walls, and Black folk walking around town. It was a pleasant surprise for me when I visited for the first time, and has always made me feel welcome and at home when I visit.
There is also a very different feel to Puerto Viejo than you may experience on beaches located on the Pacific side of the island. There is lots of reggae being played at the restaurants and bars and you’ll hear Patois / Carribean English accents spoken by locals.
Don’t take my word for it though. Make your way on out to Puerto Viejo to see for yourself and enjoy the town’s bomb vegan food and Caribbean sea!

Jammin’ Comunidad Vegana – Vegan
Location: Puerto Viejo frente a la veterinaria Diagonal Al bogo bar Limón, Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, Costa Rica
WhatsApp: +506 6372 5317
Jammin’ Comunidad Vegana is a chill Black-owned vegan spot with amazingly flavorful and colorful food. Had I not known any better, I would swear that the chefs walk around back to pick fresh vegetables to cook up on the spot right after you order.
The food is that fresh! The owner even walked over to my table and whacked open a fresh coconut right in front of me for my coconut water!
The vibe here is everything I could have asked for from a vegan restaurant on the Caribbean Sea: a slow-paced spot with fresh made-to-order food made from local seasonal ingredients, served by friendly staff.
The owner is extremely kind and seemed to actually be friends with every customer that came through! It’s very clear that he is passionate about serving bomb vegan food to people, and it warms my heart to see how much joy he gets out of what he does. That’s cute and all, but did I mention that the food is bomb!?
The food was so good that I ate there twice during my stay. They had just released their breakfast menu the first day that I dined at Jammin’ Comunidad Vegana, so I had to give the people what they want and try the breakfast out too, right?!
My Rasta Pasta came out piping hot with enough food for me to be full for hours after eating. My breakfast came with fresh-squeezed orange juice, jerk jackfruit, coconut gallo pinto, avocado, fried plantains, a chickpea omelet, and a seaweed steak. There was so much food, that it was even hanging off of the plate and I was still full by lunchtime!
I highly recommend checking out Jammin’ Comunidad Vegana if not for the bomb food, then for the friendly staff and comforting atmosphere.
AmaSer – Vegan
Location: Calle 213, Limón, Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, 70403
WhatsApp: +506 8303 7465
AmaSer is a yoga retreat that has an on-site all-vegan and gluten-free restaurant. The beach views from this restaurant are unmatched when compared to other vegan restaurants in Puerto Viejo. If you’re arriving by foot, be ready for the small hill that you will have to walk up. Gotta earn your calories!
Their food menu includes items like gallo pinto, scrambled tofu, vegan omelets, and pancakes. Their drink menu is longer than their food menu with options like teas, coffees, lemonades, and smoothies.
The Coco Pancakes that I tried weren’t my favorite, but I’ll definitely be back for the drinks and the views! All in all, I appreciate that there is a spot for our vegan kinfolk that need a gluten-free kitchen.
So whether you’re looking for some gluten-free vegan grub, amazing views of the beach, or a yoga studio, consider making your way on up to AmaSer!

Vegan Food in Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica: Vegan-Friendly Restaurants
Restaurante Pizzeria Cahuita – Vegan-Friendly
Location: Next police station; 50 metros oeste de la policia de, Limón, Cahuita
WhatsApp: +506 2755 0179
Okay, so this spot isn’t actually in Puerto Viejo. Cahuita is about 20 minutes north of Puerto Viejo by car, but ya girl got hungry during the 4.5-hour drive down from San Jose! There is also a bus stop there if you want to make a quick stop during your bus trip back to San Jose.
And golly gosh am I glad that I stopped to try out Restaurante Pizzeria Cahuita! It’s an Italian restaurant at Cahuita Inn, a few steps away from the beach. The menu has clearly marked vegan and vegetarian options. Although the vegan options are extremely limited, the handmade pesto pasta was good enough to almost make me double back and order another on my way out of town!
The outdoor dining area also has an amazing view of the ocean, which is close enough for you to go dip your toes in as you wait for your food.
Pizzeria Dalilí – Vegan-Friendly
Location: Parada, Limón, Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, Costa Rica
WhatsApp: +506 8635 2772
Pizzeria Dalilí was a pleasant surprise for me! I don’t know what I was expecting, but it wasn’t their beautiful outdoor lounge area with a full bar. They even harvest some of their ingredients, like their cherry tomatoes and basil, from their own garden!
Their menu includes a few clearly marked vegetarian pizzas that can easily be made vegan by substituting the dairy cheese for vegan cheese (small upcharge for substituting).
If you’re in town on a Monday night, consider checking out their happy hour. You get a free order of buñuelos with each cocktail that you order! Be sure to make it clear to your server that you’re vegan so that your free order of delicious dough balls will be filled with vegan cheese instead of dairy cheese and ham.
De Gustibus Bakery – Vegan-Friendly
Location: Talamanca, Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, 70403, Costa Rica
WhatsApp: +506 2756 8397
If you’re in Puerto Viejo looking for vegan pancakes, I’d highly recommend hitting up De Gustibus Bakery! They are a vegan-friendly bakery that serves other vegan options like gallo pinto, a vegan sandwich, and a vegan burger. They open super early (like, 6:45 AM kind of early), so it’s the perfect place to grab a bite before or after an early morning swim.
But back to those pancakes though… They were fluffy and sweet on their own! If you want to make them even sweeter, they come served with a side of vegan whipped cream, sliced strawberries, and syrup!
Helederia Ocho Nani – Vegan-Friendly
Location: Calle 215, Limón, Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, Costa Rica
WhatsApp: +506 8928 8272
Helederia Ocho Nani is a small vegan-friendly ice cream shop located right next to the beach and a stretch of vegan-friendly restaurants. If you’re looking to cap off your vegan escapade with a scoop or two of vegan ice cream or sorbet, this is the spot for you.
Their only actual vegan ice cream is the off-menu chocolate ice cream. Just let them know that you are looking for dairy-free options, and they’ll let you know that it’s hiding in the back.
They also offer vegan sorbet in flavors like maracuya (passion fruit) and mango. Maybe I’m the only one blown away by this, but a scoop in a cone is only 1 mil colones! That’s less than $2 USD!
Conclusion: Vegan Food in Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica
In my opinion, Puerto Viejo is the best beach for vegans to visit in Costa Rica. It’s definitely a journey to get to, but well worth the trip!
They have lots of all-vegan, vegetarian, and vegan-friendly restaurants with bomb vegan options ranging from early morning breakfast to ice cream scoops for dessert. You’ll have access to fresh food right along the beach and beautiful sunsets, which you can even enjoy from an all vegetarian beachfront restaurant! So what’s not to love about Puerto Viejo?!
